September 29 Leg Act News

This week's Leg Act Newsletter focuses on the upcoming No Kings Rally and the now ongoing government shutdown.

  • No Kings Rally Details: Scheduled for October 18, 1-4 p.m. at the Owego Courthouse Square, the rally emphasizes the Constitution’s intent to prevent authoritarian rule by dividing power among three branches of government.

    • Focus of Protest: The event urges participants to keep the message simple: No Kings by making clear, focused signs and wearing themed apparel. Attendees should follow rally leaders, chant, sing, and avoid engaging with hecklers.

    • Constitutional Concerns: Organizers and participants fear that this administration is steering the country away from its democratic foundations, while Congress has failed to provide oversight and the Supreme Court has often sided with the executive branch, undermining constitutional checks and balances.

  • Health Care and Budget Conflict: Negotiations between President Trump and Democratic leaders broke down, with Senator Schumer warning that ending ACA subsidies will cause health insurance premiums to rise 75–85%.

  • Political Retaliation and Shutdown Threats: The administration has threatened Republicans who cooperate with Democrats, cut $18 billion in New York City infrastructure funding as retribution, and warned of federal layoffs if a shutdown occurs prompting calls for bipartisan negotiation.
