Leg Act News Highlights

Farm Bill 2026

A major 5‑year package moves to the Senate. Critics warn it cuts SNAP, weakens environmental protections, expands pesticide exemptions, and increases industry influence. Farmers continue facing high costs, disasters, and mental‑health strain.

Road Trip Forum

TCDC-endorsed candidate Aaron Gies joins primary challenger Kevin Stocker to take questions in a debate-style event. May 23, 6-8 pm, Fredonia Grange No. 1.

Primary Signs

TCDC has distributed our limited supply of Gies and DiNapoli signs to be placed strategically across Tioga County. Signs will be collected and reused for the general election.

PRRIA Packaging Bill

The NYS Senate Finance Committee advances a bill requiring 30% packaging reduction, 75% recyclability, and banning 17 toxic chemicals. The bill is supported by environmental groups and opposed by the plastics industry and some Republicans.

Action Items and Events

  • Call NYS Assemblyman Christopher Friend (518-455-4538) and urge him to vote yes on A 1749, The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act.

  • If you usually vote by mail, make sure you know that you need to register for your ballot every election. Contact your county Board of Elections or go to this link: Request a Ballot - Early Mail or Absentee Ballot to have a ballot mailed to you. The last day to request a ballot online for the June 23 primary is June 14. If you are mailing your request, remember the post office has been slower with mail. Submit your request as soon as possible, and do not delay in mailing your ballot back.

  • If you do not have transportation to the early voting site (Tioga County Board of Elections, 1062 State Route 38, Owego) for the primary (June 13-21), please email Tioganydems@gmail.com.

  • Visit 866OURVOTE.org. Make a voting plan for both the primary (June 13-21) and the November election. Make sure you are registered. If you get to the polls and a problem is stopping you from voting, ask for a provisional ballot and follow up with the Board of Elections and 866OURVOTE.org.

  • Remember to get your postcards in the mail by May 22!
