December 15 Leg Act News

Leg Act News Year in Review

This week's Leg Act News reflects on the 2024 election, arguing that Trump’s victory was shaped by disinformation, misinformation, and malinformation that manipulated voters and emotions rather than facts. It highlights how misleading narratives spread widely and influenced public perception, while psychological factors and emotional responses made many susceptible to them. Remember: Credible sources and fact-checking are essential to counter these tactics!

Shifting public opinion, disillusionment among former Trump supporters, and concerns over the economy are creating pushback to the administration's policies. Democratic supporters are urged to engage in the upcoming campaign season and advocate for Democratic candidates in all races, and help regain control of the House.

  • 2025 saw major democratic threats under Trump, including sweeping executive orders, alignment with authoritarian leaders, environmental rollbacks, and escalating trade wars and foreign conflicts.

  • Economic inequality worsened as billionaires profited, ordinary families faced rising prices, and cryptocurrency expansion raised fears of financial instability.

  • Health systems and science suffered through Medicaid and Medicare cuts, a “brain drain,” weakened CDC credibility, and increased vaccine denial.

  • Government agencies were downsized or targeted for privatization, DEI efforts were attacked, ICE expanded its reach, and concerns grew over civil liberties, surveillance, and retaliation.

Action Alerts

  1. Write your health care story as soon as you can!

    1. Submit it to your legislators or the media. We can help you with that.

    2. Submit your healthcare story to our website.

  2. Check your news sources. There are sites that rate bias and credibility. One that is helpful is mediabiasfactcheck.com. Another is guides.lib.umich.edu, which rates the sources that check for bias and credibility.

  3. Keep the list of issues handy so you can reference them as they arise. Remember, you don't need to know everything, but you can listen to your friend or family member's concerns and review the issue to share with them at a later date.

  4. Run for Something! The last week in February to the end of March is the petition period, so it is time to think about getting your name on the ballot.

    1. The NYS Board of Elections has a resource page to help you plan. Visit Running for Office | New York State Board of Elections.

    2. Locally, we know there will be town justice positions; at the state level, NYS Assembly, Senate, and Governor; and federally, the NY23 Congressional seat.

  5. If you can't run, volunteer! Carry petitions for candidates, make phone calls, host a meet and greet, or lend your talents to campaign committees. Every action helps get our candidates over the finish line!
