August 25 Leg Act News

The August 25, 2025, edition of the Leg Act Newsletter by the Tioga County Democratic Committee highlights key political and social issues. Be sure to download the newsletter to read the full version of the articles.

Remarks on Israel and Gaza: Ed Nizalowski discussed the historical and ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, emphasizing the displacement of Palestinians, recent violence, and the role of Israeli leadership. He criticized media coverage and U.S. complicity in the conflict, advocating for peace.

Voter Suppression and Gerrymandering: The newsletter revisited the topic of independent redistricting commissions as a solution to gerrymandering. Dr. Heather Cox Richardson and Governor Gavin Newsom support these commissions, though challenges remain in balancing independence and accountability.

Kevin Stocker’s Congressional Campaign: Kevin Stocker, a Democratic candidate for NY’s 23rd Congressional District, introduced himself at a town hall. A former Republican, Stocker now advocates for working families, opposes tax breaks for billionaires, and criticizes incumbent Nicholas Langworthy.

Meeting on Deportations: J.G. Whitcomb attended a meeting with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s staff to discuss the plight of undocumented immigrant workers in NY. Issues raised included ICE raids, overcrowded detention facilities, and fear within migrant communities. Training on workers' rights is planned in Spencer.

Action Alerts/Events: TCDC encourages voter engagement, advocacy for fair redistricting, and support for Democratic candidates like Aaron Gies and Kevin Stocker. Upcoming events include the Legislative Action Committee meeting on August 28 and the Tioga County Democratic Committee meeting on September 16.
