Leg Act News Highlights
In this second of a multi-part series, Mark Norton discusses the broad costs of AI data centers.
Takeaways:
Environmental and Social Costs
Data centers consume large amounts of electricity, straining grids and delaying fossil-fuel plant retirements.
Significant water use for cooling raises concerns about water shortages.
Infrastructure upgrades are costly, potentially raising utility bills and causing energy inequities.
Data centers generate noise pollution and occupy large land areas, impacting communities and property values.
Few permanent jobs are created; construction jobs are temporary.
Emissions from fossil fuels and particulate matter pose health risks.
Despite environmental impacts, investments in renewable energy increase due to corporate commitments.
Community and Policy Responses
Communities should advocate for regulation, transparency, and company responsibility for infrastructure costs.
Supporting candidates who oppose undue corporate influence and funding is vital.
Grassroots efforts include research on political donations, especially from Super PACs aligned with AI companies.
Public engagement and collective voice are essential to influence legislation and community planning.
Campaign Corner
Candidate Andy Fagan is meeting with residents to discuss their concerns and to clarify his position on issues that matter to Tioga County and towns he represents in Broome and Chemung counties.
