January 12 Leg Act News

Breakthroughs, Heartbreak, and What Comes Next

Looking at Congress

  • Bipartisan legislative progress: The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance subsidies, with 17 Republicans joining Democrats in defiance of GOP leaders. The Senate advanced a bipartisan war powers measure aimed at limiting President Trump’s ability to take military action in Venezuela without congressional approval (House ACA bill passes but faces obstacles in the Senate; Senate war powers measure advanced).

  • Setbacks and challenges: The House failed to override two vetoes by President Trump on other bipartisan bills, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed, and the broader bills (including ACA subsidy extension and war powers limits) face likely hurdles or vetoes as they move through Congress.

Heartbreak in the Heartland

The article recounts the killing of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agents, highlighting video evidence that experts say shows serious misconduct and noting how the Republican administration quickly labeled her a troublemaker and domestic terrorist.
